Magic Mike: Review

Magic Mike
Yes, ‘Magic Mike’ is a movie about male strippers, and has many giggle-inducing moments. But the movie is about a lot more than just hot, scantily clad dudes gyrating. It’s a story of young men finding their way in life, pursuing their dreams, and getting sidetracked by the temptations of sex, drugs, and money. That said, there are also lots of hot, scantily clad dudes gyrating. So, best of both worlds!

The titular character, 30-year-old Mike (Channing Tatum) is an aspiring entrepreneur who moonlights as a stripper at an all-male revue run by former stripper Dallas (Matthew McConaughey). After meeting down-on-his-luck 19-year-old Adam (Alex Pettyfer), Mike christens him ‘The Kid,’ introduces him to the stage, and takes him under his wing. But the Kid’s new lifestyle means easy money, available women, and free-flowing booze and drugs—and soon his mentor may be powerless to stop him from going down the wrong path.

‘Magic Mike’ may seem like light fare compared with some of director Steven Soderbergh’s other work. But the film has real substance. Although the strip club scenes are played for laughs, the characters are not caricatures—they are fully realized and realistic. Pettyfer’s nuanced performance makes the Kid’s evolution utterly believable. And Tatum, whose real-life experience loosely inspired the story, proves he’s an excellent actor, not just a buff hottie with super-smooth dance moves. That said, he also proves he’s a buff hottie with super-smooth dance moves. So, best of both worlds!
