Synopsis
Away We Go is the story of long-time couple and expectant parents Burt (John Krasinksi) and Verona (Maya Rudolph). To figure out where they should settle down to raise a family, they go on a road trip to meet up with various friends and family and observe first-hand an often funny variety of parenting philosophies.
Directed by the Oscar-winning Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Revolutionary Road), and from a screenplay by highly-acclaimed novelists (and real-life husband and wife) Dave Eggers and Vendela Vida, the film certainly oozes talent from in front of and behind the camera. Because of this the characters, the dialogue, and the situations come across as genuine in addition to being funny.
There are moments when the film feels a little bit like it’s trying to hard. It’s mostly in the camera work and pacing of scenes that at a few points feel reminiscent of late 90s Wes Anderson. But all in all, the film is both funny and moving and successful in making the audience feel as if these characters genuinely exist.
Upsides:
- an all-star cast, director, and screenwriters make this a worthwhile and often-funny journey.
Downsides:
- there are moments where it feels like the film is trying a bit too hard.
